A SMOKERS’ DELIGHT

Smoker's Cabinet

We all know the dangers of smoking, but in days gone by this was not the case.  Between the wars it was a status symbol epitomised in the Hollywood films of the day.  If you were a serious smoker of exquisite taste and wealth then this cabinet would have been a must have accessory in the 1920’s.

Made/retailed by the established British firm of Dunhill London it is a figured walnut smokers’ cabinet on integrated stand. Loosely based on a Queen Anne design, the upper section opens to reveal a stunning illuminated fitted interior containing an array of lined drawers and cupboards for your smoking accessories.  There is even a revolving section incorporating a pipe rack.  The Dunhill plaque is proudly inset just below the cornice. 

Discovered by Adrian Rathbone, Valuer at Richard Winterton’s Lichfield Auction Centre amongst routine furniture, it is thought that it may have been a one-off made for Dunhill’s’ London offices.  Any item of vintage Dunhill is highly sought after particularly the famous cigarette lighters so there were bound to be many enquiries regarding the cabinet when it was offered for auction last Thursday. 

 

Despite three telephone bidders, it eventually found a delighted owner who bid £1,200 to secure it.
